We discovered an interesting side story as we researched the article about Paul Lynde. It seems that Elizabeth Montgomery, who was an early supporter of gay rights used the program as an allegory for being closeted- whether as a witch or a gay individual. It took me some time to realize that a favorite childhood television sitcom, Bewitched was actually a satirical allegory on the issues of modern American prejudice.
